Well File and Well Log Scanning “Paper to Digits” Service

Oil and gas companies moving towards big data analytics are missing a critical dataset in their analytic data pool by keeping information locked up inside paper logs and well files. KPS’ Data Management has the capacity to scan volumes of well logs and associated files that are created during the life cycle of a well into an accessible PPDM database.

Complete Electronic Well File

Scanning well files from “paper to digits” is the first step in KPS Data Management’s initiative to create a complete electronic well file to enable analysis of the data. The electronic well file contains data that is already in digital format, such as LAS, DLIS and other well logs, XLS spreadsheets and other digital data, along with the “paper to digits” data that has been scanned.

Well Log Scanning and Digitization

Do you have volumes of aging, hard copy well log documents in storage or sitting under the desk? Are they at risk of deterioration or damage? KPS can ensure that these valuable well log documents are preserved, digitally archived, and made accessible for further interpretation and workstation processing now and in the future.

With more than 20 years of technical well log experience, combined with our cutting-edge log digitizing well log software and state-of-the-art scanning capabilities, we are uniquely qualified to provide an all-encompassing well log data management solution that not only preserves the hard copy documents you have but adds value to and enhances the data once digitized.

Preservation and Digitization of Hard Copy Well Logs

Our well log conversion services include high quality scanning and image editing services, automated tracing routines, and quality enhancement features and correctional functions/algorithms for adjusting warped and stretched logs. In addition, data verification for the interpretation of multiple intersecting tracks and curves on a single log are provided to ensure consistent tracking.
KPS can handle all formats of well log inputs – including but not limited to TIFF, JPEG, and BMP log images. A wide variety of data formats such as LIS, DLIS, LAS and ASCII files can be processed or output.
Once hard copy well logs are digitized, our highly experience data management team can then easily convert and enhance the well log data into a variety of output formats.

Well log data projects can include any or all of the following processes:

• Digitize well log curves
• Digitize depth, dip, azimuth and quality from tadpole plots
• Depth matching of curves
• Splicing of curves to create composite logs
• Output digital data in LIS or LAS format on any media
• Repair damaged files
• Reformat from well log data to industry standards
• Extract selected data, curves or specified depth intervals
• Overlay digital data on to scanned images of paper logs
• Identify missing digital curve data
• Create or update indexes/databases

Seismic Section Scanning and Vectorization

KPS is a leading provider of geophysical preservation and scanning services to the oil and gas industry. Our proprietary software, combined with and developed from more than a quarter of a century of experience, enables us to offer our clients a unique and valuable means for restoring aging hard copy paper seismic sections to a digital format. Once digitized and preserved, the data can then be enhanced and used to add value to ongoing and future processing and interpretation activities.

Complete Electronic Well File

Frequently in the exploration industry, historical seismic data is only available in a hard copy format. Often these seismic sections cover exploration areas that lack modern seismic coverage. Conversion of the hardcopy sections to digital SEGY data is a cost efficient solution to obtaining greater seismic coverage in areas where little other data may exists. Paper does not last forever and it cannot be readily used for the purpose of advanced manipulation and processing using modern techniques, hence scanning and vectorization is the only way to take full advantage of your data.

Digitization of hard copy seismic sections empowers you to:

• Access and use data on your desktop for further processing or interpretation
• Display data at different scales
• Apply post stack processing routines such as noise attenuation, filtering and deconvolution
• Ensure long term protection and preservation of irreplaceable or cost prohibitive to replace
• Combine new survey data with historical data
• Recover or identify lost data where digital archives are incomplete or damaged

Scanning and Digitizing of Sections

KPS will scan your hard copy seismic sections using best of breed scanning technology to produce a raster image file. The seismic trace digitization software tracks the peaks and troughs of the seismic data, reconstructing the data and rebuilding the waveforms of the data. Where the seismic sections are faded or damaged, intelligent wave tracking algorithms can be applied to interpolate the missing fragments of the trace to ensure a full and accurate reproduction of the original data.

 Related Services That We Offer

• Collation and digitization of seismic velocity information from hardcopy seismic sections.
• Digitization of hard copy seismic base maps and hardcopy seismic section headers, such as shot points, gravity, elevations, coordinates, etc.
• Merging or updating navigation and elevations in the SEGY trace headers.
• Merging of elevations and static corrections, or SP/CDP within the SEGY trace headers.
• Appending or splitting seismic lines and editing of SEGY EBCDIC and binary file headers.

Map Scanning and Digitizing

Digitization is the process of converting geographic features on a paper map into digital format. The x, y coordinates of point, line and polygon features are recorded and stored as the spatial data. The feature attributes are also recorded during the digitizing process. It is the most common and labor intensive method to create a spatial database. The method is used especially when existing maps are available as the source of data. Coordinates of point features, line features and polygon features are recorded by manually pointing or tracing, using a digitizer table and cursor. The cursor position is accurately measured, by the device in order to generate the coordinate data in digital form. Although digitizing is substituted by scanning, digitizing tablets are still used to convert existing maps and drawings into GIS. Digitizing tablets typically support E-Size and larger drawings, with 0.001-foot resolution, 0.001-foot repeatability and 0.005-foot accuracy.
